Foreshadowing the dominance that was to come throughout the rest of his debut season, rookie linebacker Shawne Merriman quickly closed in on the quarterback on this play action pass play and knocked the ball free as he was bringing him down for a sack, marking both the first sack and first forced fumble of his career. The fumble caused by his strip was recovered by a teammate to complete the turnover. Merriman finished with two tackles and one pass defended to go along with the sack and forced fumble in this one, as the Chargers fell to the Steelers, 24-22, on Oct. 10, 2005.
