One of the traits that separates the truly elite players from the rest of the pack is an ability to make big plays on third down, and in the Chiefs' Week 4 matchup with the Jets, quarterback Patrick Mahomes II displayed that ability on multiple occasions. In the first quarter, on third-and-two, Mahomes dropped back to pass, pump faked, and then lofted a beautiful ball to his wide open tight end, who ran it in for the score. Later in the game, in the fourth quarter, Mahomes put his improvisational skills on display, first by converting a crucial third-and-22 by scrambling 24 yards for a first down, and later converting on third-and-eight with a nine-yard rush that effectively ended the game and gave the Chiefs the win. All told, Mahomes threw for 203 yards and one touchdown, and ran for another 51 yards, as the Chiefs beat the Jets, 23-20, on Oct. 1, 2023.
